From Greasy to Green: Sustainable Wastewater Solutions with HyDAF-GT

The drive for water security has placed pressure on industrial and commercial businesses that discharge into a sewer network to improve their effluent quality. One key area that has been identified by many Water Utilities are Food Courts within major shopping centres. Wastewater produced from food courts is very high in grease levels, which can lead to accumulation within the network and spikes in load at the final point of treatment.

The accumulation of grease not only poses a significant risk to the efficiency and operational capacity of wastewater treatment facilities but also contributes to environmental pollution, if not managed effectively. Grease accumulation can lead to blockages, overflows, and significant maintenance challenges, highlighting the need for specialised treatment technologies.

“We developed and introduced the HyDAF-GT to the Australian market over ten years ago. What is unique about the technology is that it has been designed specifically for greasy wastewater. Being a two-stage process coupled with a counter-current design makes the technology incredibly robust against variations in grease load. This advanced approach ensures that the system can effectively separate and remove high levels of grease from wastewater, protecting the sewer networks and treatment facilities from potential damage and inefficiency,” says Mathew Foster, CEO of Hydroflux Industrial.

The HyDAF-GT system operates on the principle of Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF), where air is dissolved under pressure in the wastewater before being released at atmospheric pressure in a flotation tank basin. The released air forms tiny bubbles that attach to the grease particles, causing them to float to the surface where they can be easily removed.

This innovative solution has been successfully implemented across most of Sydney’s major food courts, demonstrating its effectiveness and reliability. “We have worked with Australia’s largest shopping centres, tailoring our systems to meet the diverse needs of our clients. Capacities of our HyDAF-GT installations range from 5 through to 50 kL/h, offering scalable solutions that contribute to sustainable water management practices,” adds Foster.
