Versatile – Durable – Robust – The Many Configurations of HyPURE® MMF

February 6, 2025

Multimedia filtration (MMF) is an essential process step in water and wastewater treatment. They contain layers of different filter media targeted to remove particulates, bacteria, and other contaminants from water. MMFs can be constructed from various materials, with fiberglass being the most common option. HyPURE® MMFs are available in standard and specialised fibreglass materials, painted mild steel and even stainless steel.

Why fiberglass is the popular choice for HyPURE® MMF vessels

Fiberglass has long been the go-to material for MMF vessels due to its combination of durability, corrosion resistance, and relatively lower cost. One of the biggest advantages of fiberglass is its excellent resistance to corrosion. MMF vessels are often exposed to harsh conditions, including chemicals, water, and varying temperatures. Fiberglass, with its reinforced composite structure, can withstand these conditions far better than steel, which is prone to rust and degradation when exposed to moisture and chemicals.

The case for painted mild steel HyPURE® MMF vessels

While fiberglass dominates the market, there is a case for painted mild steel MMF vessels, particularly in industrial wastewater treatment applications. Corrosion issues are overcome by an appropriate paint coating.

Steel is inherently stronger than fiberglass and can withstand higher internal pressures and mechanical stresses. For applications where high pressure or heavy-duty performance is required (multiple cycle changes due to high-frequency backwashing), painted mild steel offers superior strength and support.

Painted steel provides a sleek, industrial look that aligns with the visual standards of certain projects which can be an appealing option for high-profile installations or premium customers who seek a more polished appearance.

The option for stainless steel HyPURE® MMF vessels

Stainless steel MMF vessels are a premium option with the structural benefits of painted mild steel and inherently better corrosion resistance without the need for paint.

HyPURE® MMF

The HyPURE® range of MMF can be utilised in a wide variety of applications including:

  • Pretreatment of advanced water from industrial wastewater sources.
  • Production of process and potable water for industry from bore water and surface water supplies.
  • Pretreatment prior to demineralisation or ion exchange.
  • Pretreatment prior to HyPURE® RO for hygienic process water or production of infant formula, dairy products, beverages, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.
  • Treatment of wastewater to meet strict environmental discharge standard – particularly with the inclusion of green
    sand media.
  • Tertiary Treatment of STP effluent
  • Raw water filtration
  • As a component in Zero liquid discharge plants from industrial processes.
